A group of Year 10 students recently completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition sailing with the Morning Star Trust.
The adventure began with two days of practice where they learnt all about sailing the 38ft yacht Eastern Star including tacking and gybing. Students had to chart a planned route around the Solent, deciding their own mooring locations and planning a menu for everyone on board. Their route took them from Cowes to Newtown Creek, where they discovered how to inflate the dinghy, row and motor it through the nature reserve - they were even joined by a seal!
The team continued on to the River Hamble, before undertaking the challenge of a night sail. Navigating in darkness using buoy lights and markers, they successfully dropped anchor off Seaview on the Isle of Wight. On their final day, they completed the voyage by sailing across to Northney on Hayling Island. Throughout the expedition, our students demonstrated their excellent teamwork and navigation skills. They also embraced the challenges of life on board - cooking meals in the confined galley kitchen and tackling the washing up in choppy waters! Not only did they successfully complete their Silver Assessed Expedition, they also achieved their RYA Competent Crew certification.
